It is a spectacle. These huge bass are chasing mackerel and they have to run a gauntlet of fishermen standing elbow to elbow on both side of the canal throwing plugs. Pip's rip is at the East end of the canal next to Scusset Beach. I heard that the mackerel were coming in there so I began fishing with a mackerel Gibbs pencil popper that I found the year before snagged on the rocks of the canal. After working it for a few casts I was on! I landed the fish pretty quickly with the huge conventional canal rod and reel I was using. It was a beautiful fish. The blues, purples, and pinks that the scales reflect are wonderful to see.
