Forgotten Flies

A friend of mine gave me this book to look at. It weighs 50lbs. It is the best book in the world. It was written by Paul Schmookler and Ingrid V. Sils. There are over 500 pages of beautiful color photos, history, artwork, and biographies. It is all very sexy. Check it out!

Cape Cod Canal Bass Blitz

12" Mackerel flies.

The first week in June the bass came tearing through the canal. It is a spectacle. These huge bass are chasing mackerel and they have to run a gauntlet of fishermen standing elbow to elbow on both side of the canal throwing plugs. The night before the word got out we caught many fish and had to leave with breaking fish everywhere.

King Salmon

My next large oil is of a huge King Salmon. Here is what the canvas looks like during the first stages. These salmon are amazing animals and a bit scary with their tiny fierce looking eyes. I hope to capture the fishes imposing presence with this life-size portriat.

Vintage Lure Paintings

Here I am hard at work. As you can see I have my model in front of me and am focused. The plug is a vintage South Bend BassOreno.

About the Striped Bass Painting

This painting is of a fish I caught in July 2007 in the Cape Cod Canal at Pip's Rip. Pip's rip is at the East end of the canal next to Scusset Beach. I heard that the mackerel were coming in there so I began fishing with a mackerel Gibbs pencil popper that I found the year before snagged on the rocks of the canal. After working it for a few casts I was on! I landed the fish pretty quickly with the huge conventional canal rod and reel I was using. It was a beautiful fish. The blues, purples, and pinks that the scales reflect are wonderful to see. I hope I was able to capture it's strength and beauty.
